Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Society

Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Committee Gentaro Okada

The society was founded in 1952 by Jun-ichi Ozaki, the first president of the Society of Starch Industry, and was renamed the Japanese Starch Society in 1972 and the Japanese Society of Applied Glycoscience in 1993, and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2002.

During this time, the Society has been made advances in the starch-based carbohydrate industry and carbohydrate-related research, working closely with industry, universities and public research institutions. It also worked closely with the Japanese Starch Roundtable and the Glycoscience Roundtable, and merged with the Amylase Research Group in 1997. The development of the technology for the production of isomerised sugars, which has revolutionised the food industry, and the development of a range of oligosaccharides, which are opening up the market for health foods, have come about through cooperation between industry, government and academia in this society.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Society’s founding, we will hold a special conference and projects. The main theme of these events is ‘Prospects for Glycoscience – Food, Health and the Environment’.These events will look at the Society’s activities over the past 50 years and promote cooperation between industry, government and academia. This will create a platform for the Society to develop leading and unique activities in the future. The conference will also help the Society to work together with industry, government and academia to develop new activities. To achieve our mission and continue to develop, we need to work closely together. This means the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees, the relevant committees, the branch associations and the members. We would like to ask for your special cooperation.
